Safe Gas Equipment Scheme
By now you should be aware that SAPGA has proceeded with the process of establishing a Safe Gas Equipment Scheme (SGES).  This implies that all equipment either imported and/or locally manufactured and supplied with the country requires a SAPGA stamp of approval. On the outset, this stamp of approval will ensure that the equipment has either been tested and in compliance to an international or nationally accepted standard and that it is safe and fit for purpose in the workplace.
How will this scheme be initiated and implemented?  SAPGA is gathering information relating to equipment currently being supplied by manufacturers, importers and suppliers. Imported equipment is normally accompanied by a declaration of conformity and test certificate. This indicates to what standard the equipment was tested.  SAPGA will on an ongoing basis adopt a relevant international standards to which the equipment needs to comply. Should the information on the declaration of conformity and test certificate not meet the minimum requirements the equipment will have to be either retested by an accredited test house internationally or be rejected by the SGES as being not fit for purpose in this country.
The SGES is registered with the Department of Labour under the OHS Act  and Pressure Equipment Regulation (PER), which provides SAPGA with the mandate to oversee all gas related equipment that is supplied within South Africa.
The ultimate aim of the SGES is to prevent the supply of sub standard equipment to end users and that all equipment at least meets the prescribed compliance criteria.
As per the PER new installations will require that a registered gas practitioner will need to indicate and certify on the certificate of compliance (COC) that the equipment installed has been formally approved by the SGES and is fit for purpose.
Approved Supplier Register
As per the SGES mentioned above, all equipment manufacturers, importers and suppliers need to register their respective equipment.
On completion of this project, the approved and registered equipment will be available on the SAPGA website for public viewing. The aim of the register is to provide credible suppliers to the gas industry. The list will be made available on SAPGA’s website and could be of added value for participants in the SGES.
